How To Make And Use A Gravity Bong
Finding new ways to smoke weed is always fun, especially if they get you incredibly high. But, imagine if you could get even more high, with less weed, using things you already have in your house? If it sounds too good to be true, fear not, it's real, and easy. Follow our step-by-step instructions for getting seriously stoned with a gravity bong.
Getting stoned is great. And getting even more stoned is better! Introduce a gravity bong into your life and give your lungs a rest (kind of). If you’ve found you’ve reached your limit of how much you can inhale, let a gravity bong take over, and rip the biggest hit of your life. Cheap, easy to make, and an efficient way to smoke your weed, what are you waiting for? Read on for step-by-step instructions on how to make both bucket and waterfall gravity bongs.
What Is a Gravity Bong?
A gravity bong is a novel way of taking a hit. Rather than inhaling the smoke, you force it into your lungs. Potent, large hits are what to expect from these, so give yourself a few hours of recovery time!
A gravity bong works by vacuum. You place the bottomless bong in water (usually in a bucket) and draw it upwards whilst holding a flame to the bowl. As you pull upwards, the vacuum caused by pulling it out of the water draws air in through the bowl, vaporizing the weed. Once you’ve reached the maximum extent, the bottle is forced back down into the water. This forces the smoke out the mouthpiece and into your lungs.
For the purpose of this article, we will refer to these devices as bongs. However, that is a more tasteful way of saying a bottle with the bottom cut off. We've all made makeshift bongs before; most of us grew up with them. It's a fundamental part of getting high.
Does a Gravity Bong Get You Higher Than a Regular Bong?
Gravity bongs will get you higher than regular bongs. By design, you are able to get far more smoke into your lungs compared to a normal bong rip. The result? You will likely be incredibly stoned.
Why Do Gravity Bongs Hit So Hard?
Because gravity bongs don't rely on your breath to draw the flame into the bowl, you can create a much steadier burning process. As such, it is more like vaporizing, so there will be little to no weed wasted. With a traditional bong, oftentimes your breath will run out before all the weed is burned.
So, not only does a gravity bong get you more high, but it's an incredibly efficient way to smoke your weed. You draw every last molecule of THC out of that bud and into your system.
The Two Different Types of Gravity Bongs
There are two types of gravity bong: bucket (or bath) bongs, and waterfall bongs. These essentially work in the same way, though the waterfall bong functions in reverse.
The Bucket Bong
A bucket or bath bong utilises a container filled with water. The bong is drawn up through the water to burn the weed, and, as it does so, it fills with smoke. It is then pushed down to force the smoke into your lungs.
The Waterfall Bong
A waterfall bong looks more like your traditional bottle bong, except instead of putting a downpipe in it, the bowl is placed over the mouthpiece. It is filled completely with water, and the water is allowed to run out of the rush hole. As this happens, it draws in air through the bowl. Assuming you’ve put a flame to it, this will burn the weed and fill the bottle up with smoke. Once the water has dropped below the rush hole, you simply breathe in hard and get high!

How To Make a Bucket Gravity Bong
Making a bucket bong is cheap and easy. In fact, it’s easier than making a traditional bottle bong. It shouldn’t take more than ten minutes.
What You Need To Make a Bucket Gravity Bong
- Plastic bottle
- Knife or scissors
- Bucket, bath, or a second, larger plastic bottle
- Aluminum foil
- Weed!
Instructions for Making and Using a Bucket Gravity Bong
1. Cut the bottom off the bottle; discard the bottom.
2. (Optional) Cut the bottom off the second, larger bottle (if this is what you are using), discard the top.
3. Fill your “bucket” with water.
4. Remove the bottle cap and wrap tin foil around the top of the first bottle to make the bowl. Do this well to prevent the plastic beneath from burning. Poke 3–5 good-sized holes in it. It needs to draw well.
How To Use a Bucket Gravity Bong
1. Gently submerge the bong into the water—make sure the bowl stays completely dry!
2. Load your bowl.
3. Gently draw the bong upwards as you light the bowl—the slower you do this, the better it will burn.
4. Once full of smoke, pull the bowl off, put your mouth around the top (ensure it’s cool!) and push the bong down into the water.
5. Try not to whitey!
How To Make a Waterfall Gravity Bong
A waterfall gravity bong is even simpler to make, requiring only one bottle. It could be a little messy, though.
What You Need To Make a Waterfall Gravity Bong
- Bottle
- Scissors or knife
- Aluminum foil
- Weed
Instructions for Making a Waterfall Gravity Bong
1. Using your scissors or knife, make a small hole about a quarter of the way up the bottle—much like a rush hole.
2. Fill with water and cover the rush hole, else it will just flow out.
3. Like with the bucket bong, remove the bottle cap and wrap tin foil over the top to make a bowl. Ensure you do this well!
How To Use a Waterfall Gravity Bong
1. Hold a flame to the bowl and release the rush hole; the water will begin to flow out, drawing smoke in.
2. Once the water has dropped beneath the hole, pull the aluminum foil off.
3. (Ensuring you don’t burn yourself) Put your mouth over the top and breathe in hard.
Maintenance and Cleaning of a DIY Gravity Bong
The materials used to create your homemade gravity bong will dictate how you care for it. If you’ve splashed out on some expensive glass gravity bong and treasure it greatly, clean it regularly to maintain a clean, tasty smoke. If you’re using a manky plastic bottle, change it fairly regularly. It’s up to you how often you smoke bucket bongs, but probably don’t go more than a couple of sessions without making a new one. However, this is up to you, and if you like that brown gak taste, be our guest.
In terms of the aluminum foil, to ensure the most efficient smoke, change it after every couple of hits. If it begins to block, it won’t draw properly and you’ll just be wasting weed. If you do that, there’s no point to doing a gravity bong at all. It’s all about efficiency and strength!
Are Gravity Bongs Dangerous?
There are a few risks associated with using gravity bongs.
The first is plastic inhalation. As you are likely to make the bong from a plastic bottle, melting plastic is a distinct possibility. To avoid this, make sure you wrap the top very well in foil. Don’t skimp on this stage, as nothing ruins a smoke like a lungful of plastic fumes. Mostly they are disgusting, but they do also contain various toxins.
Leading on from this, if you get the mouthpiece too hot, you could burn your lips with melted plastic. Again, nothing spoils a rip like scalding hot plastic against your lips. The last thing you want is to be picking solidifying gloop from your face while blazed! Be careful.
Finally, one of the greatest dangers is also why you’re likely to be doing it. You’re going to get really, really high. As such, take the necessary precautions and don’t book a flying lesson or something immediately after. Get a comfy space ready and a glass of water, and you’re sure to be fine!
