With intensity levels to suit all customers, magic mushroom grow kits are a great way to cut your teeth growing psilocybin-rich mushrooms. They come complete and ready to grow, with all of the complicated work already done. All you need are clean water, clean hands, and a modicum of patience—but nowhere near as much as if you were to start with spores!

Kits come in a range of classic and new hybrid strains that each have their own look, potency, and effects. Multiple flushes are standard as the kits are colonised with robust and dense mycelium before being sent to you. Keep reading to find out all about them.

What is a mushroom grow kit?

A magic mushroom grow kit is a cheap and easy shortcut to growing large quantities of magic mushrooms in your own home. What’s the catch, you may wonder? Well, there isn’t really one. You basically open them, hydrate them, wait a while, and then harvest your shrooms.

These kits come with a substrate that is fully colonised with psilocybin mushroom mycelium (which forms the majority of the organism). Colonising a substrate with mycelium is the longest and hardest part of growing shrooms at home. As such, all you need to do to make them fruit is expose your grow kit to a suitably low temperature, open it, and maintain a high humidity level.

What to expect from your mushroom grow kit

These grow kits are very easy to use and are totally beginner-friendly, but they still require some care for optimal results. After opening and exposing them to cold water, they will then require a little time (a week or so) to start developing pins, which are the beginnings of mushrooms. From this point, the mushrooms will grow rapidly, ready to harvest in a matter of days. You’ll then see multiple flushes (bursts of mushrooms) over the next 2–4 weeks, meaning you’ll get around 4–5 flushes in total.

First, you’ll need to open them up and soak them in cold water for 9–12 hours. Then, you can pop them inside the included humidity tent and expose them to an ambient temperature of 23–27ºC. For this, you can place a heat mat beneath the grow kit, or use a small heater in an enclosed space to create a more even ambient temperature. Once the first pins appear, you’ll need to open the bag 1–3 times a day to ensure adequate air exchange as your shrooms respire!

Zamnesia Grow Kit “Mexican”

The first to be recognised in the West as a psychedelic feast, the Mexican strain is potent in effects and rich in history. With a deep brown, bell-shaped cap, this strain is simply brimming with psilocybin. Now, you can worship like the ancients with the original magic mushroom. These shrooms are fairly straightforward to grow and offer good results. In terms of effects, they’re pretty balanced and a good place to start for those curious, but will also satisfy the more experienced psychonauts among you.

Fresh Mushrooms Grow Kit “McKennaii”

McKennaii magic mushrooms are thought to be the strongest strain of Psilocybe cubensis (though not the strongest species of magic mushroom). These shrooms grow abundantly, offering good results. The caps tend to be quite round, and the mushrooms themselves can get very large, which is very satisfying to see as a grower. In terms of effects, expect a trippy experience with strong visuals and intense introspection (deep thoughts and powerful emotions). We’d suggest caution when using these shrooms, as they are genuinely powerful.

Zamnesia Grow Kit “Pes Amazonian”

PES Amazonian is believed to have originated in the Amazon jungle and grows with a large, dark cap that has a pronounced nipple. This strain grows quite tall and fills the tray completely with psilocybin-rich shrooms. Regarding effects, PES Amazonian offers a generally pleasant experience that is fairly intense, without being too overwhelming regarding thoughts and emotions. If you fancy a powerful trip without having to surrender completely, these can be a good option.

Fresh Mushrooms Grow Kit “Golden Teacher”

The unique appearance of the Golden Teacher strain, with its yellow-dotted tan caps and generous stems, is matched by its unique characteristics. With origins unknown to this day, it could be the source of what is meant by “put on your thinking cap”. This strain derives its name from its all-round friendliness. It’s simple to grow, offers a good yield, and produces moderate effects that are suitable for beginners. But don’t be fooled; they are still potent magic mushrooms and must be treated with respect.

“Copelandia Hawaiian” Grow Kit

If you choose this grow kit, be warned! These are the strongest species of magic mushroom in the world. Compared to the cubensis species, you have to be careful with “Blue Meanies”, aka Paneaolus cyanascens. These shrooms grow fairly tall and ghostly white, and bruise blue extremely easily—thanks to their high psilocin content. What’s more, they are difficult to grow compared to the other grow kits. While cubensis is fairly resistant to contamination once the mycelium has fully colonised the substrate, cyanascens remains vulnerable even when the mushrooms are still growing, so you’ll need to practice good hygiene if you pick this kit. Still, we’d recommend it if you’re after a trippy adventure.
