How To Make A Cannabis Sandwich - 5 Tasty Recipes
The humble sandwich has existed for thousands of years. Still, that doesn’t mean we can’t spice up proceedings with a healthy injection of our favourite herb. If you’ve ever wanted to combine your love of sandwiches with your passion for weed, now’s your chance.
The sandwich may have earned its name from John Montagu, the aptly titled 4th Earl of Sandwich, but in reality, the concept of eating bread with a filling has been around for centuries. In fact, sandwiches are among the few things that unite all cultures and creeds, with the earliest known examples in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. So, what better way to celebrate one of life’s most unifying (and enjoyable) food types than with a healthy dose of good ol’ Mary Jane?
Yep, forget super noodles, Cheetos, bacon, and marmalade; we’re going to fill our sandwiches with one of the best greens on the planet—marijuana. That’s not to say you can’t spice up your sandwich adventures with other unusual ingredients, but in all the recipes below, we’ll focus on reinventing classic sandwich recipes with a drop (or two) of euphoria-inducing cannabis.
Ways to include cannabis in a sandwich
Aside from picking a filling, the biggest challenge of canna-infused sandwiches is figuring out how to incorporate your favourite strain. The good news is there are several ways to make cannabis a principal part of your favourite sandwich. These include:
- Cannabis bread: You can’t have a sandwich without bread, so why not give that bread a much-needed boost with some psychotropic THC? This is arguably the most hands-on approach, but if you have an hour spare and the ingredients ready to go, nothing beats the satisfaction of kneading your own cannabis-infused dough.
- Cannabutter: The most common option for adding cannabis to a sandwich is cannabutter. Whether you decide to butter both slices or one is up to you, but it’s simple, effective, and won’t spoil the taste of your filling. Again, we recommend setting aside some time to prepare the cannabutter separately. However, given its versatility, having a batch in the fridge ready to go is only a good thing.
- Canna-oil: The process of making cannabis-infused oil is very similar to cannabutter, but it’s not quite as universal. You’ll probably want to use something like cannabis-infused olive oil with a flatbread sandwich or as a garnish for a BLT. You could also try cannabis-infused coconut oil, but again, it will very much depend on your chosen filling.
How to make a cannabis sandwich
You know the history of the humble sandwich, and we’ve explained how to feature cannabis as a key ingredient. Now, it’s time to spice up lunchtime (or any meal time) with five cannabis sandwich recipes.
Equipment
All of the following recipes require only a few pieces of equipment:
- Bread Knife
- Butter knife
- Medium-sized non-stick frying pan
- Chopping board
- Large spatula
- Medium-sized mixing bowl
Cannabis grilled cheese sandwich
Give the classic grilled cheese (aka cheese toast) a face-lift with the help of cannabutter!
Ingredients
- 2 slices bread
- 2 slices cheddar (grated also works)
- 1–2 tbsp regular butter
- 1–2 tbsp cannabutter
Directions
- Preheat your pan on low–medium heat. While the pan is on the hob, butter one side of both pieces of bread with the regular butter. Then, butter the other side of both pieces with the cannabutter.
- Place one piece of bread, regular-butter-side down, in the pan. Layer the cheese slices on top of the bread.
- Add the second piece of bread, with the cannabutter-side facing the cheese. Excessive heat can destroy cannabinoids, so your cannabutter mustn’t come into direct contact with the pan (hence the two different butters).
- Grill the sandwich until one side is toasted and lightly browned. Carefully flip the sandwich and repeat. Once the cheese has melted, you’re good to go. Just let it cool for a few minutes before you dig in.
Peanut butter and jelly cannabis sandwich
That’s right; even the humble PB&J can be taken to the next level with help from our favourite herb. Enjoy a psychoactive spin on a childhood classic.
Ingredients
- 2 slices cannabis bread
- 1–2 tbsp regular butter
- 1–2 tbsp peanut butter
- 1–2 tbsp strawberry jam
Directions
- Cut two thick slices of cannabis bread using the bread knife and chopping board. Add the regular butter to one side of both pieces.
- Spread your peanut butter and jam on one piece of bread (butter-side up). Add the other piece of bread, and cut into whatever shape you fancy. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could swap out the regular butter for cannabutter, but make sure you take it slow and steady—edibles pack a punch!
Italian bud club sandwich
Bring out your inner Tony Soprano with this stoner version of a deli classic.
Ingredients
- 1 Italian roll
- 1–2 tsp cannabis-infused olive oil
- 2 tsp balsamic vinegar
- 1 finely chopped red onion
- 1 finely chopped tomato
- ¼–½ cup finely chopped lettuce
- 2 slices ham
- 3 slices Italian sausage
- 3 slices salami
- 3 slices cold-cut pork
- 3 slices Italian cheese
Directions
- Cut the Italian roll lengthways and lay both pieces flat on the chopping board. Remove some of the dough from one slice of the roll. Add the red onion and tomato to the newly created recess.
- Continue layering your ingredients, adding the lettuce to the red onion and tomato. Lightly drizzle your fillings with the balsamic vinegar and cannabis-infused olive oil.
- Add similar amounts of balsamic vinegar and cannabis-infused olive oil to the second piece of bread.
- Now, it’s time to stack this sandwich to the sky. Fold the ham lengthways and add it to the already-filled slice of roll. Now, add the Italian sausage, salami, cold-cut pork, and Italian cheese.
- Combine both pieces of bread, cut the sandwich in half, and prepare to eat like royalty.
Cannabis BLT
Introducing the CBLT—cannabis, bacon, lettuce, tomato. Requiring just a handful of ingredients, this is the perfect psychoactive summer sandwich.
Ingredients
- 2 slices white bread
- 1–2 tbsp cannabutter
- 2 thick slices smoked back bacon (or vegetarian/vegan alternative)
- 1 large tomato
- Lettuce of your choice
- 1–2 tsp mayonnaise
- ½ lemon (juice and zest)
Directions
- Fry the back bacon in the frying pan on a medium heat. While the bacon cooks, butter one side of both pieces of bread with the cannabutter.
- Add the mayonnaise to a mixing bowl and squeeze in the juice of half a lemon along with the lemon zest. Now, add the mayonnaise mixture, bacon, chopped tomato, and lettuce to one slice of bread (in that order).
- Add the second slice of bread and serve. Again, if you want a bigger kick, try drizzling some canna-oil over the lettuce before eating.
Marijuana meatball sub
For something a bit heartier, try this marijuana meatball sub. It can even be adjusted to suit vegan and vegetarian sandwich/cannabis lovers!
Ingredients
- 8 fresh beef meatballs (or vegetarian/vegan alternative)
- 1–2 tsp cannabis-infused olive oil
- 2 hot dog buns
- 100g marinara sauce
- 100g grated mozzarella
- Salt/pepper/garlic powder/dried oregano (to taste)
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 100°C. While the oven is heating up, fry the meatballs in the frying pan over medium heat. While the meatballs cook, slice both hot dog buns in half lengthways.
- Add the canna-oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and dried oregano to all pieces of the hot dog buns. Place the buns in the oven on a sheet tray and cook until there’s a nice crisp on all pieces.
- Remove the hot dog buns from the oven and lay them evenly on the chopping board. Add a generous dollop of marinara sauce to the bottom pieces before topping with four meatballs each.
- Finish with another serving of marinara sauce, followed by the grated mozzarella. Add another splash of cannabis-infused olive oil before combining the buns and serving.
