It’s no secret that we all live very hectic lives. Wake up in the morning, rush around the house to get ready, and have breakfast consisting of a quick cup of joe and a protein bar—rinse and repeat until the weekend!
But when our day off comes around, most of us prefer to slow down, put on a chef’s hat and get cooking! Here at Zamnesia, we've been gathering canna recipes for years—and now we want to add five more, specially designed for the most luxurious wake and bake of your life!
Cannabis for breakfast?
The concept of “wake and bake” has been around for years. If this is the first time you’ve come across the term, wake and bake means to consume cannabis right after waking up. Although weed is often associated with relaxed evenings when our calendars are free from commitments, more and more people have started to add this herb to their morning routine.
But what about infusing weed directly into our breakfast and benefiting from a delicious, nutritious meal with plenty of uplifting cannabinoids?
How to start your morning the right way
Eating edibles and consuming cannabis in the morning both require a little preparation, so let us outline some guidelines to ensure your wake and bake goes smoothly.
Dos of cannabis edibles
- Do decarboxylate the cannabis: Decarboxylation is the process of heating marijuana at a low temperature to activate the THC or CBD. Without this step, your infusion won’t have its desired effects, and all your hard work will result in a yummy breakfast—sans cannabis.
- Do start with a small dose: When infusing food with cannabis, start with a small amount (like 5–10 mg of THC per serving) to gauge its potency. You can always eat more, but you can’t eat less once you’ve made your way through the stack of pancakes.
- Do mix evenly: Ensure the infused butter or oil is evenly distributed in the dish to avoid different levels of cannabinoids in each portion.
- Do plan for timing: Remember that edibles take longer to kick in (30 minutes to 2 hours), so plan your breakfast accordingly.
Don’ts of cannabis edibles
- Don’t over-consume: Avoid the temptation to eat more if the effects aren’t immediate; give the cannabis time to do its thing.
- Don’t cook at high temperatures: Cooking at temperatures above 175°C can degrade cannabinoids, reducing the potency of your edibles.
- Don’t assume potency: Not all cannabis is the same. The potency can vary greatly depending on the strain, terpenes, and infusion method. Always measure and calculate doses carefully.
- Don’t forget to hydrate: Weed can sometimes cause dry mouth (also known as cotton mouth). Make sure to have plenty of drinks nearby, like water and fruit juice.
