How To Make Marijuana Gummy Bears
Weed gummies make dosing easy, taste great, and can be stored for a long time. Whether you want to use cannabis recreationally or consider yourself a medical user, there are specific benefits to gummies that are hard to find elsewhere!
Marijuana gummy bears are a great choice for cannabis users looking for a discreet, tasty, convenient, and lung-friendly way to consume cannabinoids such as THC and CBD.
Gummies offer long-lasting effects and are easy to dose, making them preferable in some cases to smoking or vaping. As THC from gummy bears is metabolised by the liver, by the time it reaches the bloodstream it has been converted into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent and longer-lasting version of this compound. So be aware of this before taking any edible cannabis products, as it can be a blessing or a curse, depending on what effects you’re searching for.
We have two recipes here. One for making gummy bears from scratch, and another for making them from existing gummy bears—with the latter being more straightforward but less customisable. Both recipes require some sort of canna-oil, so if you don’t have that, check out our articles on making your own cannabis oil.
How to make marijuana gummy bears
Making weed gummy bears is pretty easy. Our recipe can be adjusted as you see fit, and it’s just one of many, so don’t feel restricted by it. Rather, use it as a simple starting point from which you can experiment and explore to your heart’s (and stomach’s) content. Just be sure to include the binding agents, otherwise you’ll end up with some sort of gelatinous cannabis juice (which could be nice in its own right!).
Marijuana gummies from scratch
This first recipe shows you how to make cannabis gummies using raw ingredients. With this in mind, you’ll probably need to do some shopping if you’ve never made them before, as some of the equipment and ingredients are quite specific. If you don’t want to do that, scroll down and see the instructions for marijuana gummies with regular gummy sweets.
Equipment
- Saucepan
- Whisk
- Measuring jug
- Spoons
- Silicone gummy bear moulds
- Dropper or pipette
- Strainer or cheesecloth
Ingredients
- 240ml fruit juice (your choice)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon honey or sweetener
- 3 tablespoons unflavoured gelatine or agar-agar (for vegan gummies)
- 1–2 teaspoons soy lecithin
- 60ml cannabis-infused coconut oil
Directions
- Heat the juice: First off, pour all of the fruit juice into the saucepan and add the lemon juice and honey. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
- Add gelatine and lecithin: Gradually whisk in the unflavoured gelatine and soy lecithin, stirring constantly until they have fully dissolved. This step is crucial for the texture and consistency of the gummies—if they don’t fully dissolve and mix, your gummies will be inconsistent.
- Combine with cannabis oil: Once these ingredients are mixed in, lower the heat and slowly add your cannabis-infused coconut oil, whisking thoroughly to ensure even distribution so that you can accurately dose the finished product!
- Mould the gummies: Using a dropper or pipette, carefully fill the silicone moulds with the mixture. Be sure to work quickly as the gelatine will start to set. You can keep it on a low heat as you do this to help it stay viscous.
- Chill and set: Now place the filled moulds in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until the gummies are firm.
- Remove and store: Remove the gummies from the moulds and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for maximum longevity and quality.

If you don’t fancy buying all the raw ingredients, then you can also use existing gummy bears and just melt them down—as they contain all the ingredients already! In this case, your limited to the flavours of existing gummies, although these are quite varied so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
Equipment
- Saucepan
- Silicone gummy bear moulds
- Dropper or pipette
Ingredients
- 1 package of shop-bought gummy bears
- 60ml of cannabis-infused coconut oil
Directions
- Melt the gummies: Place the store-bought gummy bears in a saucepan over low heat. Stir continuously until the gummies are fully melted. Do not be tempted to use a higher heat to speed up the process, as this will likely burn certain ingredients and ruin the final product.
- Add cannabis oil: Slowly add the cannabis-infused coconut oil to the melted gummies, stirring thoroughly to ensure an even distribution to make dosing more accurate.
- Mould the gummies: Using a dropper or pipette, fill the silicone moulds with the gummy mixture. Meanwhile, keep the mixture over a very low heat so that it doesn’t set in the process.
- Chill: Place the moulds in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until the gummies are firm.
- Remove and store: Remove the gummies from the moulds and store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
Marijuana gummy bears: troubleshooting
Below, find some common questions and answers regarding cannabis gummy bears.
How many cannabis gummies should you eat?
The correct dose depends on how strong your gummies are, which depends on how potent your cannabis oil is, how much you used, and how much of the gummy mixture you used. As a general rule, begin with one or two gummies and wait at least two hours before taking more. The aim is to have gummies containing around 5–10mg of THC per gummy.
How long before cannabis gummies kick in?
Gummies will usually take effect between 30 minutes and two hours from being consumed. If you have an empty stomach, it can sometimes even be quicker than this. Likewise, if you have a full stomach, it could take longer. Always give it at least two hours before consuming a second dose.
Which is better, cannabis gummies or weed brownies?
It depends on whether you prefer gummies or brownies! Gummies are easier to dose accurately, making them useful for people who want to know how much they’re taking. Brownies are perhaps more fun as an event, and you might find they’re more enjoyable to eat, but dosing is more difficult. Brownies are also more perishable than gummies.
Which oil is the best for making cannabis gummies?
Coconut oil is widely regarded as the best oil for making cannabis gummies due to its high fat content, which helps with the infusion process and enhances the absorption of cannabinoids in the body. You will sometimes see coconut oil called “MCT oil”. Other forms of oil can also work.
How to store marijuana gummy bears
When stored correctly, cannabis gummies can last for a very long time—indefinitely really. The amount of sugar in them acts as a natural preservative and means that, although they might lose quality, they shouldn’t really go bad. Below, find some tips for storing them appropriately to preserve their flavour, texture, and potency.
- Airtight containers: As with all things, store your gummies in an airtight container to prevent exposure to air and moisture, which can degrade the potency and texture. A dry, airless environment promotes longevity (for all things inert or dead)!

(301) - Refrigeration: Keep the gummies in the refrigerator to maintain their firmness and extend their shelf life. Due to their ingredients, gummies can easily melt and lose their form, which can look rather sad!
- Labelling: Clearly label your container with the dose and date to avoid any accidental ingestion, especially if you have children or guests in your home.
