There are few stoners who have not heard of a Clipper lighter, what with their iconic shape and design. These things have been around for half a century now, and have become a mainstay of spliff smokers and bong rippers the world over. With their famous designs, which change almost every day, and their sure reliability, Clippers are considered by many to be the very best lighters in the world, and as such are a world leader. For cannabis users, this is even more true; from top to bottom, they are designed with the weed smoker in mind.
Clippers are pretty legendary lighters among stoners. Long-lasting, robust, reliable in all weather, they have served us well for many years now. For those who don’t know, Clippers are cylindrical with a nylon or metal body. You have to try pretty hard to destroy one. Plus, you can refill the butane gas and replace the flint in a Clipper, meaning you can keep your favourite one going forever.
Stoners love Clippers chiefly because of their reliability. Capable of lasting almost forever, they always give a steady flame on first attempt. This makes them perfect for hitting bongs or smoking up in a bush. Wind-resistant and robust, they’ve always got you covered.
Another nice touch is that the flint is attached to a long, thin, removable packing tool. This means you can pack down the end of your spliff before you light it. They know what you need.
For how good they are, Clippers are cheap. Here at Zamnesia, most of our Clippers are about £1.29. Sometimes they can get a little more expensive, for instance with limited-edition offerings or Clippers made of special materials.
Clipper lighters were first designed in 1972 by Enric Sardà. Mostly, they are made in Barcelona, but are also produced in Chennai (India) and Shanghai (China). Annually, about 450 million Clippers are created.
Clippers are just great. They are specifically designed with the stoner in mind. Alongside the packing tool, they release extra butane when turned upside down or on their side, which creates a bigger flame (a turbo flame)—perfect for hitting bowls.
Moreover, the base of the Clipper is designed to fit in a bowl, so you can tamp it down nice and tight, enriching your smoking experience.
Clippers are made to last. The gas can be refilled and the flints can be replaced. Butane is what you need in terms of gas. It is designed for specific Clipper flints, so don’t just put anything in there. However, we sell universal flints for Clippers, Zippos, and more.
To get the most out of your Clipper, you’ll need to treat it right and maintain it when things start to run out. Thankfully, they’ve made this very easy for you.
Clippers are designed to provide the right flame for the job; as such, you can’t adjust the size.
If you pull up on the Clipper’s flint (the bit you roll with your thumb), you’ll find it pops out. What you have in your hand can then be used to pack down the ends of joints and cigarettes. It is also how you replace the flint, by unscrewing the bottom.
Clippers use butane. Clipper sells their own branded gas, which fits into the base of the lighter. Push this and it should refill. However, you can use other butane designed for lighters, but ensure it’s correct, and that it will fit into the base of your lighter.
No matter how well they’re made, occasionally you’ll find your Clipper goes wrong. Depending on how much you love it, you could just buy a new one, or you could fix it. Below are a few simple fixes to common issues.
Eventually, the flint will go. When this happens, the wheel will no longer turn.
This is an easy fix. Replace the flint. Do this by removing it, as you would to use it as a packer. At the base, there will be a little screw. Gently undo this and you will release the spring. Drop a new flint into the packer, and replace the spring and screw it up tight. It could take a few rotations of the wheel for it to begin working properly.
You may find that you are unable, for some reason, to inject gas into the lighter.
First, make sure you’re using a compatible refill. If this is the case, try cleaning out the hole at the base of the clipper. Perhaps wipe it with alcohol wipes. If the problem persists, consider buying a new lighter.
The wheel may still turn, but there is no spark. In this case, once again, the flint is gone.
Following the same steps as above, replace the flint.
Clipper lighters can be bought at just about any corner shop, headshop, or supermarket in the world. Seriously, you’re probably never more than about 100 metres from a Clipper. You can also buy them in large quantities online, such as here at Zamnesia. Wherever you go, you’re sure to find a huge array of different and ever-changing designs.
