North Spore - Pink Oyster Liquid Culture: The Most Forgiving Mushroom Variety

Pink oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus djamor) grow in tropical and subtropical environments as far north as Japan and as far south as New Zealand. They produce large, fan-like meaty caps and almost no stalk, making them ideal for roasting, sauteing, frying, and more. While they have a sour taste when eaten raw, cooked and seasoned pink oyster mushrooms pack bold umami flavors and elevate any dish they are added to. In fact, the taste of seared/fried pink oyster mushrooms is sometimes compared to that of bacon or ham steaks!

To grow pink oyster mushrooms at home, use North Spore's liquid culture to inoculate the growing medium of your choice; straw, sawdust, mulch, and even coffee grounds work great for this variety. To avoid contamination, remember to use sterile equipment and work in a clean environment, even though pink oyster mushrooms are known to flourish in almost any environment.

How to Store Pink Oyster and Other Mushroom Liquid Cultures

North Spore Liquid Cultures can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 months. To best preserve the live mycelium they contain, we recommend placing your live culture syringes in the fridge upon receipt. Remember that all North Spore liquid cultures are sterilized and shipped in sealed plastic sleeves, so we recommend storing them in their original packaging.

When you're ready to inoculate your medium, remove your liquid culture syringe from its sleeve, agitate it to disperse the mycelium, and proceed to inoculate your growing medium.

How to Prevent Contamination When Growing Mushrooms at Home

Contamination can ruin a mushroom grow in a heartbeat. And though pink oyster mushrooms are renowned for being extra hardy, we always recommend practicing cleanliness when growing mushrooms at home. Use a sterile growing medium and always work in a clean environment using sterile cultures and tools. When inoculating your medium, do so through a self-healing, sterilized injection port and preferably in a still air box or an area with little airflow.
