What is chai?

What Is Chai?

First things first—what exactly is chai? You might have seen or heard of it standing in the queue at your favourite coffee shop or browsing your local supermarket. As mentioned, chai, otherwise known as masala chai, comes from India. It's thought that the first use of chai dates back well over 5,000 years, and it is still highly favoured amongst many hot drink lovers from all over the globe.

Essentially, chai is a mix of black tea (typically Assam) and milk combined with a spice mixture known as a “karha”. This mixture usually consists of ground ginger and green cardamom pods. Sometimes, other spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and peppercorns are added according to taste and preference. Sugar, honey, or syrup can also be added to sweeten the tea. When all are brewed together, the result is a great-tasting and aromatic experience.

So, if you're looking to make this tasty drink with a cannabis twist for yourself, read on to find out exactly what's needed.

Ingredients

Ingredients

To make some cannabis-infused chai, you'll need the following:

  • 3 cups (700ml) water
  • ½ gram cannabis
  • 2 tablespoons butter (or coconut oil)
  • Chai spice blend
  • Black tea bag
  • Milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • Sugar/honey/syrup

Of course, if you have certain dietary requirements, you can always switch out the butter for coconut oil, and use a dairy alternative such as soy, rice, oat, almond, or coconut milk for your tea.

Equipment

Directions

Now that you've got your ingredients and equipment sorted, it's time to go to work and create some delicious chai. This is a particularly simple recipe, but be sure to take your time with each step for the best results. Ready? Let's begin!

1. First, you need to grind up your weed. While this can be done with a regular grinder, you need the finest mill possible. To achieve this, use a pestle and mortar.

2. Next, add 3 cups (700ml) of water to your cooking pot, and bring to a boil.

3. Add 2 tablespoons of butter (or coconut oil) to the pot.

Directions: Add 2 Tablespoons Of Butter

4. Once the butter melts into the boiling water, add in your finely ground cannabis. Now, add your chai spice blend to the butter/water/cannabis mixture (excluding the black tea).

5. Reduce the heat to a simmer, and stir the mixture every few minutes or so, ensuring that the cannabis doesn't stick to the sides of the pot. The entire process takes about 30–60 minutes to guarantee sufficient infusion of the weed and the spice blend. If you feel the water is getting a little low, be sure to top it up!

6. Now, just before you plan to take your chai mixture off the heat, add in the black tea bag to steep for 5 minutes. The reason the tea is added late in the process is so it doesn't become over-brewed and bitter.Directions: Add In The Black Tea Bag To Steep

7. Once suitably infused, thoroughly strain the mixture through your tea strainer into your cup, and you'll have some delicious cannabis-infused chai to enjoy. Now is the time to add in your milk, as well as a little sugar, syrup, or honey to bring out some sweetness.

It's tea time

There you have it, a surefire way to create a tasty chai with a tinge of THC. The result is flavourful, aromatic, and sure to provide a little buzz. Perfect for those relaxing evenings when you want to unwind. So get your ingredients together, find your favourite mug, and settle on the sofa with your steaming cannabis chai.
