AK-47: Cannabis Strain Review & Information
AK-47 might sound intimidating, but its bark is much scarier than its bite. Give this famous sativa-dominant strain a go for large, resinous yields of uplifting bud!
Often referred to as the “one hit wonder”, just one toke of this power plant is enough to experience an intense but pleasant high. The renowned THC-laden strain is one you’ll want to enjoy time and time again. But what exactly goes into this award-winning sativa-dominant wonder? Let’s take a closer look and see what’s involved.
CHARACTERISTICS OF AK-47
Originally conceived in 1992 and refined in 1999, AK-47 was created by Simon at Serious Seeds. Its “recipe” is shrouded in so much mystery that even KFC would be proud of it. But, as you can see below, we have done our best to break it down for you.
Genetics | 65% Sativa / 35% Indica |
Parents | Thai, Mexican, Colombian, Afghan |
THC | 20% |
CBD | 1.5% |
Flavours | Citrus, Pine, Spice, Skunk |
Effects | Relaxing, Social, Cerebral, Uplifting |
This sativa-heavy hybrid derives from four types of landrace strains: Thai, Mexican, Colombian, and Afghan, which combine to form a potent blend of diverse genetics. Although the exact lineage is disputed, AK-47 is thought to have originally began life as a hybrid mix of only Thai and Afghan strains. It then began to really take shape in the early 1990s, ultimately giving us that quality blend of global genetics we have come to know and love.
From what we do know, this strain contains a mix of roughly 65% sativa and 35% indica in its genetic makeup. It gives you the best of both worlds, and makes it very clear that this is a plant worth taking notice of.

Alongside its impressive heritage, growing enthusiasts (both amateur and experienced) will be pleased to hear that AK-47 is generally a very straightforward, forgiving, and easy plant to grow. Requiring no more effort than the average cannabis plant, AK-47 boasts a quick flowering time and sizable yields.
Whether you’re looking at an indoor or outdoor grow, it is important to note that whilst not an imposing plant, AK-47 can reach a height of 1–1.5m. Something to be conscious of if you're a discreet grower. This height range applies to both indoor and outdoor plants.
AK-47 will flourish in temperatures between 60–75°F (15–24°C), but can handle some fluctuations as well. Whilst ventilation is not a huge issue when growing outside, those growing inside will surely want to contain AK-47’s pungent skunk-like smell.
Taking only 8–10 weeks to mature its sativa-dominant buds, even growers in northern regions can crop this specimen before the autumn cold and rain arrive. With optimal love and care, indoor plants can churn out up to 500g/m². Outdoors, specimens are robust and resilient, and deliver respectably large yields.
You can expect AK-47 to produce tight, dark yellow buds with plenty of trichomes. However, plants left to flower in higher temperatures may develop fluffier buds as a result. Overall, AK-47 is an easy-to-grow plant that will really come into its own whether grown in soil or through hydroponic means.
AK-47: FLAVOUR AND EFFECTS
AK-47 is renowned for an aroma and taste characterised by notes of heavy skunk and pine, with slight woody and citrus undertones. Couple that with a reasonably high THC content of around 20%, and you are in for a high-quality, flavourful, and long-lasting experience.
AK-47 promotes feelings of euphoria and motivation. Whilst the CBD content of this strain is not its strongest selling point, clocking in at around 0.5%, AK-47 still comes highly recommended among both recreational and therapeutic users. Providing a mild body buzz and easing tension, this strain has the potential to induce couch-lock with enough hits. The “one hit wonder” nickname is not a gimmick, and makes the strain a great smoke to share between friends.
