7 Unusual Ways To Consume Cannabis
Most people inhale cannabis as a vapor or smoke. Otherwise, you're likely to consume it as an edible, such as hash brownies. However, there are plenty of different ways to experience cannabionoids, so let's take a look at 7 unique options.
Most people’s first experience with weed involves smoking or vaping the substance—and many will stick with this method, as it’s a bonafide classic. From here, the next step on most people’s cannabis-consuming journey is edibles. While these methods will always hold a special place in the hearts of weed lovers, the cannabis world has come up with novel ways to consume this plant and its many compounds.
Whether you want to try something new, or you’re looking for a more health-conscious way to consume weed, there are plenty of reasons to switch up your consumption method. In this article, we’ll explore seven unusual ways to use cannabis.
7 unusual ways to consume cannabis
Not all of the following methods will get you high, making this list suitable for both those who want to experience the plant’s psychoactive properties, and those who don’t. What’s more, some are here more for novelty’s sake, while others have very real and beneficial applications, particularly for those who might consider themselves medical cannabis users.
Cannabis sprays
Cannabis sprays come in varying configurations and feature varying ingredients. Pharmaceutical sprays, such as Epidiolex, have been approved for the treatment of very specific medical conditions, and represent a genuine innovation in cannabis therapeutics. On the other hand, some cannabis sprays have a more broad intention, offering a range of users a discreet, easy, and accurate way to dose cannabinoids. Moreover, these sprays come in small, portable bottles that you carry anywhere.
Typically, cannabis sprays are used by spraying the contents directly into the mouth or under the tongue for quick absorption through the mucous membrane—but nasal sprays exist too. Cannabis sprays provide a controlled dose, making it easy to manage your intake—which is why they are a preferred method of consumption for pharmaceutical products.
Some cannabis sprays may only contain CBD or THC, while others might have a wider spectrum of cannabinoids. Generally, these sprays will not contain terpenes, flavonoids, and other plant-derived chemicals, and therefore may provide different effects compared to more chemically complex formulas.
Bath salts
Cannabis bath salts won’t get you high, but they will add an extra-relaxing element to your bathtime. Containing cannabinoids and terpenes, in theory these compounds might be able to produce soothing local effects on the body. However, due to the small amount of cannabinoids dissolved in a whole bath’s worth of water, this is unlikely to have a profound effect.
What’s more probable is that—much like with essential oils—the terpenes will evaporate in the hot water and you will breathe them in as vapor. Depending on the terpenes present in your bath salts, not only will the product smell different, but it could have slightly different effects, such as being more relaxing or energising. Though soothing, cannabis bath salts will not replace ingestion if you intend to have cannabinoids enter your bloodstream!
THC & CBD tampons
For people seeking relief from menstrual pain, THC and CBD tampons offer a unique solution—but it’s uncertain how well they might work. These tampons are infused with cannabinoids that, in some scenarios, have been shown to affect pain and inflammation, potentially providing targeted effects when necessary. While some small studies claim to show that CBD tampons might help people with period pain, the evidence is far from certain. Furthermore, almost no evidence exists to suggest whether THC tampons work.
It’s worth noting that there is conflicting evidence regarding whether THC absorbed through the vagina can get users high. Ultimately, much less THC is absorbed vaginally compared to oral consumption, and so users are unlikely to experience a notable “head high” when using this route of cannabinoid delivery.
Cannabis chewing gum
Cannabis chewing gum is another discreet and convenient way to consume cannabis, and it works in a similar way to oral sprays or, indeed, nicotine chewing gum. This method allows for the slow release of cannabinoids as you chew, providing a steady and controlled experience—again making it a good option for those who consider themselves medical users. It’s perfect for those who need a subtle way to consume cannabis throughout the day, and who want a low but continuous supply of cannabinoids.
The future of cannabis consumption
There are plenty of other ways to use cannabis too, and these are just some of those lesser-known ones. Depending on why you use cannabis, you’re likely to have different requirements and desires regarding consumption, so it can be helpful to understand the various options available to you and how they work.
