CORIANDER

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is a popular spice featuring in many culinary flavours of the world and is a staple of Asian cooking dried or fresh. Pungent and flavoursome Thai curries would not be the same without a generous handful of freshly chopped Coriander greens. Many places in the world call the fresh leaves Cilantro and the seeds Coriander. Easy to grow with little demands except water and sunshine Coriander is a tasty and hardworking addition to any companion herb garden.

Coriander is a mighty deterrent to many garden pests and will repel aphids, potato beetles and spider mites. Grinding up the Coriander seeds and making a tea is a guaranteed way to control spider mites when cooled and used as a topical spray. Tachninid flies, hoverflies and a variety of parasitoid wasps will be attracted to your garden when you grow Coriander providing physical front-line defence.

Once nicknamed "dizzycorn" because of the narcotic effects of the ground up seeds (lots of seeds!) Coriander is considered an aphrodisiac and was a major ingredient for love potions popular during the Renaissance.
