Bolivian Torch XL (Echinopsis bridgesii): An Ancient South American Mescaline Cactus

Known locally as wachuma or achuma, the Bolivian torch is a unique cactus species native to the Bolivian plateau of the Andes. To the unassuming eye, the Bolivian torch is often confused with other mescaline cacti, particularly the more well-known San Pedro (used predominantly in Peru and Ecuador). In Bolivia, however, this cactus of the high plains is a respected plant with indispensable spiritual value.

The Bolivian torch is a columnar cactus that can grow up to 6m tall with large ribbed branches measuring up to 20cm wide. Though they typically develop up to 7 ribs, 4-ribbed varieties are prized for their elevated potency and rarity. In summer, watch in awe as large, white flowers emerge from the tops of your Bolivian torch cactus and open during the night, releasing a fine fragrance into your garden. Mature Bolivian torch flowers can measure up to 20cm in diameter.

For centuries, shamans have used this ancient cactus as part of their practice. Loaded with mescaline, the Bolivian torch is revered for its potency as well as its high concentration of peptides (amino acids). Now, you too can reap the rewards of this ancient plant at home with these easy-to-grow XL cuttings that measure between 5–9cm wide and 50cm long.

How to Grow Bolivian Torch Cactus at Home

Bolivian Torch XL

At Zamnesia, we take great pride in the health and vigour of our cactus cuttings, and we carefully inspect every specimen prior to shipping. Once you receive your Bolivian torch cutting, plant it directly in a pot with cactus-specific potting soil and several holes for drainage. Never plant Bolivian torch in regular potting soil, as the high nutrient content in these soils may inhibit its growth.

Keep Bolivian torch cuttings in the shade for the first 3–4 weeks, and do not water them. Once they've developed roots, move your Bolivian torch cuttings into the sun and water sparingly. We recommend watering the Bolivian torch cactus no more than 3 times a week in summer, once a week in spring/autumn, and once every 2–3 weeks in winter.

For optimal results, place your potted Bolivian torch cactus in a shallow dish with water. This will allow the cactus to take up water as needed through the drainage holes in the bottom of its pot, preventing overwatering. Similar to San Pedro, the Bolivian torch is renowned for being very fast-growing and can develop up to 40cm of new growth a year.

Effects of Bolivian Torch Cactus

The Bolivian torch is highly regarded as one of the most potent mescaline cacti on the planet and has long been used in traditional rituals and shamanic practices. Its effects can produce intense euphoria, hallucinations, and, in some instances, vomiting (often considered to be a sign of cleansing). An average dose of pure mescaline is 0.3–0.4 grams.
