Zamnesia - 7-Ribbed San Pedro: A Must-Have For Collectors And Psychonauts
The San Pedro cactus has long played a central role in the rites and rituals of traditional Andean cultures. Particularly prominent in Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi) can be found as far south as Argentina and Chile at altitudes of up to 3,000m. Typically developing 5-6 ribs, 7-ribbed San Pedro varieties are extremely rare and highly sought-after by cactus collectors and psychonauts alike. At Zamnesia, we've managed to track down this prized variety so you can easily grow it at home.
What Is the San Pedro Cactus?
Achuma, aguacolla, hahuacollay, giganton—the San Pedro cactus goes by many names in its native regions. Found throughout the Andes, from Venezuela and Colombia to Argentina and Chile, archaeological evidence suggests that the San Pedro cactus has been deeply intertwined with Andean culture for at least 3,000 years. Like many natural hallucinogens, it's believed that San Pedro was used for spiritual and religious practices such as divination.
Today, the San Pedro cactus is cultivated worldwide as an ornamental thanks to its large, tubular growth and beautiful, short-lived flowers. 7-ribbed San Pedro cacti are particularly sought-after, as most varieties only produce 5-6 ribs. In many areas of South America, shamans and seers continue to practise the traditional use of San Pedro for spiritual purposes.
San Pedro contains mescaline and lower concentrations of other alkaloids such as tyramine, hordenine, 3-methoxytyramine, anhalaninine and anhalonidine. Together, these compounds produce San Pedro's characteristic psychoactive effects.
How To Grow 7-Ribbed San Pedro Cactus
Growing a San Pedro cactus at home is simple with these live cuttings from Zamnesia. Our experts grow all our cactus varieties in-house and then propagate them carefully to ensure the best results when you plant them at home.
After selecting only the healthiest specimens for cloning, our experts slowly dry out our cuttings to ensure they heal properly. From there, they are packaged and quickly shipped to our customers for planting.
- For the best results, we recommend planting your San Pedro cutting as soon as you receive it.
- Fill a clean pot with cactus soil, which is typically sandy and contains fewer nutrients than regular potting soil. Place your cutting into the soil vertically (with the callused side in the soil).
- Water your cactus cutting well after planting and for the coming weeks—this will promote the growth of healthy roots. Ensure the soil dries out completely between waterings.
- Keep young cuttings in a well-lit area without direct sunlight. After a few weeks, your cuttings should develop small roots and can be gradually brought out into the sun.
- Water rooted cacti sparingly.
