Kratom is a drug with various effects, and these can range from energising and mood-boosting to relaxing and sleep-promoting. Ultimately, it depends on how much you take. In this article, we’re looking at when you should take kratom for certain purposes, and when not to.

Understanding kratom: What influences its effects?
Broadly, kratom can exhibit two distinct effects.
At lower doses, it has energising, stimulant-like properties that boost mood, energy, focus, and motivation—not unlike caffeine. At higher doses, it has heavier effects, more akin to opioids, due to its affinity to opioid receptors.
There are varying strains of kratom that contain varying ratios of psychoactive alkaloids, and therefore some are more likely to exert certain effects than others. Though a broad categorisation, green-veined kratom is said to be the most energising, white kratom is thought to be well-balanced, and red is said to induce the more opioid-like effects. Nevertheless, dose is still a major contributor when predicting the effects of any strain.
Given its unique properties, individuals may want to take kratom to energise and/or relax themselves. In order to do this without disrupting your natural cycles, you'll need to know when the best time to take it is.
Kratom and food
But first, a note on food and kratom. Like with the intake of magic mushrooms, the effects will be much stronger if you take kratom on an empty stomach. Kratom's alkaloids attach to receptors in your stomach, so if it is filled with food the kratom can't dock to the receptors as easily as if your stomach was empty. Even eating while you are still on kratom can diminish the effects and cause it to wear off more quickly.
But ultimately, it depends on what you want. If you take kratom on a full stomach, the effects will be less intense but there will also be fewer negative side effects. It will be a softer, more relaxing experience.

When is the perfect time to enjoy kratom?
As with the above, the perfect time to enjoy kratom is contingent on what you’re looking to get out of your experience. Do you want to energise or relax yourself? It’s not just about taking kratom at the right time, but taking the right amount at the right time. For instance, a small, energising dose is suitable for the morning but not advisable before bed. And a large dose is great before bed but probably unhelpful in the morning. Think about what you want from your kratom experience.
Morning use: Energising your day
Let’s start with the morning. If you want to give yourself a boost, then a smaller dose of green or white kratom is probably most suitable. For ease, you may want to take kratom powder or kratom capsules, rather than raw kratom leaf. Though you might be tempted to take a larger dose, be aware that this might inhibit your day if you’re not prepared for it.
Also, note that the effects of kratom will wear off after around three to four hours. Therefore, if you take kratom early on in the day, you should expect to feel its effects wane sometime in the early afternoon. So when timing your kratom use, consider the duration of effects and whether you're going to redose at some point (more on this below), or simply allow the effects to fade away.
Evening relaxation: Unwinding with kratom
If you’ve had a long day and you want to relax, then a higher dose of kratom might be more effective. This could be at the end of a work day to chill, or it might be just before bed to aid your sleep. If you use kratom as a sleep aid, be aware that once you begin to rely on substances (especially potentially addictive ones like kratom) for sleep, it can be hard to sleep (or believe you’ll be able to) without them.
Red kratom, or higher doses of white and green kratom strains, is thought to be most suited to evening use.
Listening to your body: Finding your perfect schedule
When using any drug, but especially one like kratom, it’s essential to truly listen to your body. Like all drugs, kratom must be treated with respect as it can produce adverse effects. The following section looks at how to manage your kratom use to keep it healthy and controlled.
Counteract tolerance buildup
Some people enjoy kratom so much that they want to take it more than once a day. But the body develops a tolerance to kratom quite fast, so you should always seek to keep that tolerance as low as possible. As such, it's best to avoid using kratom multiple times per day. If you are going to use it more than once, wait around three hours before redosing, and increase the dose by just 0.5 grams at a time.
To further counteract tolerance buildup, consider using different strains of kratom every time you take it. This way you change things up a bit, as each strain contains varying concentrations of alkaloids. In keeping with this thinking, allow three days to pass before enjoying the same strain again.
Adjusting your routine
As mentioned, kratom has stronger effects when taken on an empty stomach. While adjusting for this can result in a more profound experience, it's always wise to balance your kratom use with your overall comfort and wellness. Adjust only as much as is comfortable, and don't let it interrupt your day-to-day life.
