Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Seeds: Part of Ayurvedic Tradition
Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is an easy-to-grow shrub that is popular in the Indian Ayurvedic tradition. This plant needs little in the way of moisture and can be moved outdoors once the last frost has passed. It can be planted directly in pots and beds outdoors, or germinated indoors earlier in the year, then transplanted.
It flowers around midsummer, with little red berries. The leaves are a pleasant green, and the plant grows fairly bushy and can reach a maximum of one metre in height, if the roots have enough space to grow. It can thrive in partial or full sunlight, and it is not afraid of heat!
If you intend to harvest your ashwagandha, it should be ready after around six months of growth—or some time in autumn.
