Zamnesia - Sakura Essential Oil: An Essential Piece of Japanese Culture

Sakura essential oil is made with a careful blend of natural fragrances to perfectly capture the scent of blooming cherry blossom trees. Its aroma is delicate and light, combining notes of white flowers with the sweetness of ripe fruit—perfect for elevating any space.

Cherry blossoms can be found growing natively across the Northern Hemisphere. But in few places are they so iconic as in Japan. Known locally as sakura, the cherry blossom varieties that Japan is known for are unique cultivars of Prunus serrulata that have been specially bred and cultivated for their flowers. Throughout spring, the trees produce beautiful, delicate blossoms that are white and pink in colour and produce a rich aroma akin to that of vanilla. Of course, besides making for gorgeous ornamental plants, sakuras have deep cultural meaning in Japan.

In Japanese waka poetry, for example, cherry blossoms are seen as a sign of the ephemeral nature of life—a metaphor likely adapted from Shinto and the "pathos of things" ("mono no aware" in Japanese). The transient and fragile nature of cherry blossoms means they are often also interpreted as a sign of mortality. Since the Nara period (710 CE), the Japanese have been practicing hanami, a type of feasting performed under sakuras and other flowering plants, and the cherry blossom has also featured in countless nationalist, military, and sporting campaigns. In aromatherapy, sakura oil is used to soothe and elevate the mood of a given space.
