Zamnesia - Lemongrass Essential Oil: Fresh, Sweet, and Uplifting

Barbed wire grass, silky heads, or fever grass—lemongrass (Cymbopogon) goes by many names. For centuries, it's been cultivated around the world and used as a culinary and holistic herb. Its aroma is notably citric with a distinct sweetness and subtle earthy hints, too. Zamnesia's lemongrass essential oil has been specially distilled to preserve all of these aromatic notes and the plant's natural properties.

Lemongrass varieties grow natively across Asia, Australia, Africa, as well as some tropical islands. The species most commonly cultivated for culinary purposes or the production of essential oils and citronella is Cymbopogon citratus, which is renowned for its particularly rich aroma. Lemongrass plants can grow up to 200 cm tall and produce long, green grass blades packed with natural terpenes such as limonene, myrcene, linalool, nerol, geraniol, and more—all of which contribute to its rich fragrance. Thanks to its strong aroma, rich flavour, and unique properties, lemongrass is central to many African and Asian cultures.

Records show that lemongrass has been cultivated in Asia for at least 2,000 years, particularly in India, Sri Lanka, and China. It's believed that lemongrass oil has been in production since the 17th century, even though it only started being used in the West relatively recently. Today, aromatherapists use lemongrass essential oil for its energising, uplifting scent. The aroma of lemongrass is also thought to repel insects.

How to Use Lemongrass Essential Oil

We create our oil using 100% pure Cymbopogon citratus, which is slowly distilled to extract its essential aromas and compounds. The result is a pure oil that's perfect for using in aroma diffusers, oil burners, or as a surface cleaner. Use 3‒5 drops for aromatherapy, or dilute in water for cleaning. Within minutes, your space will fill with the fresh, energising scent of natural lemongrass.
