Zamnesia - Frangipani Essential Oil: The Scent of the New World
Love the sweet aroma of frangipani? Enjoy it at home, at work, or in any other space with this 100% natural essential oil crafted by Zamnesia. Made from fragrant frangipani flowers that are slowly distilled to preserve their rich scent and properties, this oil is perfect for use in diffusers, oil burners, or as a diluted spray.
Not to be confused with the Australian plant Hymenosporum, frangipani (or Plumeria) is native to the Neotropical Realm reaching from Florida, USA through Central America, and as far south as Brazil. Named after 17th-century botanist Charles Plumier who made regular travels to the New World to document its plants and animals, Plumeria received its colloquial name after a noble Italian family created a perfume imitating its distinct aroma. Frangipani flowers form from early summer to autumn and feature five rounded, waxy petals that take on beautiful white, yellow, pink, red, and orange colours.
Throughout its native regions, frangipani has adopted many complex cultural roles. Among the Mayas, for example, the plant and its flowers are believed to be associated with the deities of life and fertility, and are a strong symbol of female sexuality. For the Aztecs, Plumeria was a sign of social status and often planted in the gardens of nobles. In the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, frangipanis were introduced from Mexico and are often planted near graveyards to mask the smell of death. Some Hindus also use frangipanis as offerings at temples. Throughout the Pacific islands, frangipani flowers are used to make leis.
